If you use the right fabric, then a little goes a long way. The new TrunkTech hammock from Grand Trunk, for example, weighs just 15.5 ounces for a double hammock (11.7 ounces for a single) but can hold up to 900 times its own weight.

High-tech hammocks have become a popular backpacking and camping sleeping option in recent years, for good reason. They pack down small and light, and they don’t require resting on the hard ground as sleeping bags do. Grand Trunk makes several of the most affordable basic camping hammocks, but for the new TrunkTech launched this week, it used a soft, breathable weave made from a proprietary 40D 1.1oz diamond ripstop nylon. The 11-foot by 6.6-foot hammock includes reflective end loops, aluminum carabiners and a stuff sack.

Kevin Kaiser, Grand Trunk co-founder, says the weather-proof hammock comes with a full lifetime warranty. “We strive to make premium gear that will last you a lifetime,” Kaiser says, “gear that will inspire you, year after year, to get out and enjoy everything this world has to offer.”

Kaiser says the new fabric for the TrunkTech was designed for a “bed-sheet soft” feel while offering improved packability in the upgraded strength ratio, all while folding up to the size of a water bottle. The TrunkTech hammock sells for $70, but debut pricing has the hammock as low as $40.
