In recognition of Word Water Day, celebrated March 22, Monroe-based Fluid Equipment Development Co. (FEDCO) is sponsoring a poster contest with Monroe County elementary and middle schools eligible to participate.

FEDCO is a manufacturer of pumping equipment for desalination water treatment exported around the world from its headquarters in Monroe.

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated March 22 as the first World Water Day to raise awareness regarding different issues about water around the world.

This year’s campaign focus is “Accelerating Change.”

According to a written statement provided by the company, 2 billion people are living without access to safe water. This World Water Day is about accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. The global campaign "Be the change" encourages people to take action in their lives to change how they use, consume and manage water.

To participate in the contest, students in elementary and middle schools are invited to create a color poster illustrating how they plan to conserve water in their daily life, according to the 2023 theme “Accelerating Change.”

The overall school prize is an Extreme Science Experiment visit from the Imagination Station. Each student will receive a World Water Day bookmark for participating and a pizza party prize will be given to first-place winners selected by FEDCO employees. The contest is open to all Monroe County school students in kindergarten to eighth grade.

“FEDCO is proud to support our community and share the importance of water that creates real jobs right here in Monroe County,” Eli Oklejas, president of FEDCO, said in the release. “The winning posters are displayed at our headquarters for our employees and customers to see.”

Contest information can be found on the company’s website by following the World Water Day link at www.fedco-usa.com or by calling the marketing department at 734-241-3935.
