Federal funding plans for Rochester transit projects set for review Wednesday
Sep. 3—ROCHESTER — A $2.5 million software and hardware upgrade for Rochester transit is expected to largely rely on federal funds.
The system that will replace outdated GPS and passenger counting technology is one of three projects being considered for the city's annual list of transit projects to be partially funded by the Federal Transit Administration.
The list calls for using $2 million in federal funds for the updated system that will help dispatchers track buses and passenger numbers, with an eye toward improving performance, according to Rochester Public Transit.
The current GPS system is 15 years old and the related hardware is reportedly out of date and difficult to replace.
The remaining $500,000 for the project is slated to come from local funds generated through bus operations.
The Rochester City Council will hold a public hearing on its 2023 Transit Program of Projects, which includes the new software and hardware, during its meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday in council chambers. The meeting day has been shifted due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday.
In addition to the new technology, the 2023 program calls for using $2.8 million in federal funds for transit improvements near St. Marys Hospital and $96,000 for downtown transit improvements.
A combined $724,000 in local transit funds is expected to support the two projects.
Funding the three projects is expected to leave the city with $8.7 million in federal transit funds in reserve for future projects.
The federal funds have some limits related to use, and projects approved must be listed on local, state and federal transit plans, which require varying levels of approvals.
If the council adopts the proposed slate of projects Monday, it will still need to approve related contracts, designs and spending as projects move forward.
