Feds recover $8.4M in PPP loans obtained by fake Orlando ministry, according to DOJ

Federal agents received a civil judgment against a fake Orlando ministry for $8.4 million in PPP loans the government claims was obtained through fraud.

Court records allege Joshua, Joy, Evan, and Mary Jane Edwards defrauded the Small Business Administration when they filed an application for coronavirus relief funds, the Department of Justice reported.

Joshua Edwards filed the application in April 2020 on behalf of ASLAN International Ministry, Inc. to receive money from the Paycheck Protection Program.

He submitted documents that painted a picture of a successful Orlando-based ministry that employed 486 people on a monthly $2.76 million payroll and had revenue of more than $51 million in 2019. He submitted IRS forms and a cover letter from an accountant that showed summaries of ASLAN’s bank accounts.

The Edwards family received the loan and tried to buy a $3.7 million luxury home in a private residential community at the Four Seasons Private Residence community at Walt Disney World Resort, according to the DOJ.

Officials said the family tried to hide the money through multiple bank accounts.

The investigation ended as authorities caught the family of four on the run with shredded documents and a paper shredder in their vehicle.

Law enforcement officials were able to retrieve the funds for the SBA through the DOJ’s Money Laundering and Asset Forfeiture Section.
