“You Feel Powerful”: Victoria Beckham Discusses Her Spring 2020 Collection

When Victoria Beckham started her brand more than 10 years ago, her runways were a testament to the slinky, close-to-the-body style Beckham herself favored. Her second-skin sheaths, with a bold zipper running up the back, became real-world and celebrity favorites for their sultry silhouette and comfortable stretch fabric—but a lot can change in a decade. For her Spring 2020 collection, Beckham sent out some of her most whimsical, free-spirited creations yet, including floating frocks in all shades of the rainbow.

As the designer told Vogue after the show, it’s not a sharp pivot from her earlier aesthetic, but an evolution based on what she and her customers want. “What I want to wear in the summer are those dresses—because they’re flattering, because the fabrics are so light, and because they feel cool, modern, and fresh,” she said, adding, “I know that my customer wants a dress. Dresses are a huge part of my business, and so each season it’s: How do you do something new? What is the new dress that my customer wants?”

In addition to the light-as-air maxis—VB describes seeing them on the catwalk like this: “I felt, as the girls were walking, the ruffles were almost dancing around their bodies”—the designer also upped her suiting, shirting, and skirt story this season. High-necked blouses were paired with prim midiskirts and mannish jackets for a look that’s a little Left Bank meets SoHo. Complete with T-strap shoes in jewel tones and Beckham’s covetable bags, it’s a hard look to beat in a season shaping up to be about a subversive ladylike polish. Few do it with as much panache as Beckham too, who, between her slips and suits, never gives up on the idea of a strong look that’s still 100% women. She said, “You feel powerful when you wear those dresses, but feminine at the same time.”
