"I can't explain the feeling of defeat," said Croft. "When you do everything, you pour everything into a patient -- and it's not enough -- and then to know that they could have gotten vaccinated and it could have made a difference."

Her 14-year-old daughter came to her and said: "Mom, we need to pray for my friend's parents. And her friend's parents are in my ICU," she said.

Florida and Louisiana were among the highest for hospitalization numbers of the coronavirus pandemic on Monday.

Louisiana was expected to break its record within 24 hours, prompting Governor John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, to order residents to wear masks again indoors.

Some doctors in the state are urging people to get vaccinated, warning that hospitals are overwhelmed. Many nurses are out sick with the virus, leaving the state with a staffing deficit of 6,000 people.
