Feeling lucky? Louisiana has had more Powerball lottery winners than most states

Louisiana may be one of the luckiest states in the nation, boasting the seventh-most Powerball lottery winners of the 45 states that offer Powerball, betting website LouisianaBets.com found.

Since the state began offering Powerball in 1995, Louisiana has had 17 total winners, which ranks seventh of all the states that allow Powerball, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, LouisianaBets found.

Indiana claimed the top spot as the luckiest state, with 39 Powerball winners coming from the state. Missouri ranked second with 31, while Minnesota was third with 22 since the Powerball lottery began in 1988.

Even though Louisiana has had more winners than most other states, it's been several years since Louisiana had a winner. The most recent two winners came during a five-month span between October 2017 and March 2018, according to LouisianaBets, with one being a $191.1 million ticket that was the largest lottery prize in the state's history.

Louisiana also had a winner of $50 million in May 2013 and $85.7 million in July 2010. The last Louisiana winner to share their identity was Emilia Delgado, who won $34.1 million in 2008. At the time, the 45-year-old resident of Kenner was a neonatal nurse, according to LouisianaBets.

Delgado's win was part of another lucky streak for Louisiana's lottery players. In less than a calendar year, Louisiana had three winners — Delgado's $34.1 million, William Hield Jr.'s $15 million win, and Carl Hunter's $97 million win.
