Feeling lucky? RMV announces details for 2022 low number license plate lottery

How low can it go?

That is the question, it seems, this time each year when the state Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) conducts its annual low number license plate lottery, the details of which were announced in a Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) press release late Friday.

Sometimes considered to be a sign of Massachusetts elite, importance or longevity, spotting a vehicle with a low license plate number on state highways and byways is a head-turner, if not conversation starter.

Fortunately, duly-licensed drivers and/or owners of properly registered vehicles from the state need not be rich or famous to enter the RMV low plate lottery and have until Sept. 2 to apply.

There is no fee to apply for the lottery, which this year features plate numbers F7, 36, 78K, X44, 1S and 6666 among the 199 available tags, according to the RMV.

If an applicant is selected as a winner, a special plate fee will apply, as well as the standard registration fee, the release said.

Among the rules and eligibility requirements, according to Friday's release:

  • Only one entry per applicant will be accepted, regardless of the number of active registrations the applicant has.

  • An applicant must be a Massachusetts resident with a currently active, registered and insured passenger vehicle.

  • Companies/corporations may not apply.

  • MassDOT (Registry of Motor Vehicles, Highway, Mass Transit and Aeronautics) employees including contract employees and their immediate family members are not eligible.

  • An applicant’s registration and license cannot be in a non-renewal, suspended or revoked status at the time of entry, the time of the drawing or the time of the plate swap. As such, an applicant must not have any outstanding excise taxes, parking tickets, child support, warrants or unpaid E-Z Pass/Pay by Plate violations.

  • All information received, including names of all applicants and the list of winners, is subject to release in accordance with the Massachusetts Public Records law.
