Felicity Huffman is still in shock over her arrest last week, and her alleged involvement in the college admissions bribery scheme is already taking a toll on her marriage to William H. Macy.

A source told Us Weekly that "the shame and humiliation" brought on by charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and her subsequent arrest "are unfathomable" for the former "Desperate Housewives" star.

"Getting arrested is the last thing she ever imagined," the insider added, while another source said that she hasn't "fully grasped the extent of [her] alleged crimes or the possibility of prison time." Her charges could result in a maximum sentence of five years behind bars.

She was arrested last week before being released after paying her $250,000 bail.

Additionally, Macy is "heartbroken" over the scandal and has reportedly "been in tears" over the situation. He avoided charges because he reportedly wasn't directly involved in the scheme to pay $15,000 for an SAT proctor to correct daughter Sofia's incorrect answers after she turned in her test. Though he helped Huffman pursue the scheme again for their younger daughter, they ultimately decided not to go through with it, meaning he allegedly never broke the law.

As for the couple's 22-year marriage, it appears to have hit a rough patch with their first major scandal as a couple.

"Felicity and Bill have been arguing," another source told Us Weekly. "The biggest concern is Felicity's criminal case and how this is impacting their daughter."

"This situation has been very trying on Felicity and William's marriage," another source told ET Online. "They love each other but they've been arguing a lot."

"Felicity and William have an incredibly strong marriage but this situation has put a tremendous amount of pressure on them," the source added. "Their close friends were stunned by the news because they've always a seemed like honest, good people, people who would never lie and cheat to get what they wanted. They almost seemed to pride themselves on their honesty."

As for their daughter, Sofia, 18, who is still a high school senior, she reportedly "had no knowledge of the actions taken in regards to the improvement in her SAT test score." As a result of her mom's alleged bribe, Sofia's score jumped a reported 400 points. It's unclear if it has helped her get into any of the elite universities named in the case.

Huffman is just one of the many people charged in connection to the massive scheme, which also included actress Lori Loughlin. Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, allegedly paid $500,000 to get both of their daughters into the University of Southern California under the false pretenses that they were rowing recruits.

"They were caught red-handed in this FBI sting, but they’re both trying to justify it as something any parent would do for their child,” a source close to Huffman explained of the famous parents. "They’re loving moms who allegedly broke the law by cheating the system, so now they could be considered criminals."

"Neither actress knew this would become so serious," another insider added.

Felicity Huffman, Mossimo Giannulli and Lori Loughlin are expected to appear in court in Boston at the end of March.
