Escambia County Animal Welfare to participate in National Adoption Weekend

The Escambia County Department of Animal Welfare and Best Friends Animal Society are teaming up for a holiday adoption extravaganza Dec. 9 through 11. Best Friends Animal Society is a leading animal welfare organization working to save the lives of cats and dogs in America’s shelters.

The collaborative weekend-long event encourages people to open up their homes to adoptable animals by choosing to adopt, not buy, their next pet. During the event, the Department of Animal Welfare will waive adoption fees for anyone looking to take home a cat or dog.

Best Friends has partnered with over 600 shelters and rescues for the holiday campaign. The three previous adoption weekends resulted in over 25,000 pets finding loving families. Anyone considering adding a new pet to their family can make a difference by choosing to adopt instead buying their pet.

Across the country, shelters are struggling with higher intake, while live outcomes, such as adoptions, fosters and rescues are not keeping pace. This has led to a population imbalance, with more animals in shelters staying for longer periods, and causing increased strain on shelter staff.

The purpose of the event is to encourage families to adopt from the local shelter. Even if now is not the best time for a family to adopt, this event is the perfect opportunity to learn other ways to help the shelter.

Escambia County receives $13,200 award for landscaping workshops and plant giveaways

Escambia County has announced a $13,200 award from the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Estuary Program's Community Grant Program in support of coastal landscaping workshops and plant giveaways.

The county will host the workshops and giveaways in partnership with UF/IFAS Escambia Extension and the Florida Master Gardeners to improve resident awareness and access to native landscaping resources. In addition to public workshops, the project will also work to engage local nurseries to carry native coastal species for retail purchase.

Staff and project partners will begin nursery outreach in the coming months, with workshops and plant giveaways planned for the early spring. Native landscaping is required for properties seeking coverage under the Perdido Key Habitat Conservation Plan. The approved plant list is designed to maintain and improve habitat conditions for coastal wildlife, including the critically endangered Perdido Key Beach Mouse.
