GBCC student receives Newman Civic Fellowship

PORTSMOUTH — Louis Fowler, a first-year business marketing major at Great Bay Community College, has received a Newman Civic Fellowship, a national year-long scholarship program that recognizes and supports student problem-solvers with leadership qualities.

Fellows are nominated based on their potential for public leadership and their work with communities. The program is sponsored by Campus Compact, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to higher education civic and community engagement. Throughout the fellowship year, Campus Compact provides students with on-site and remote educational opportunities to improve their skills and develop strategies for social change, as well as create a network of peers.

Fowler, founding member and president of Pride Alliance Club, a student-run organization that gives LGBTQ+ students a space to foster queer friendships and promote education and representation, is pleased to represent Great Bay and thrilled with the opportunity before him in the year ahead.

“I’m incredibly honored, and I’m looking forward to making connections and growing as a leader,” he said. “I am grateful to be part of the process.”

During his time at Great Bay, Fowler has worked to educate the community about LGBTQ+ issues and forged connections in the larger queer community, including working with Seacoast Outright to participate in Portsmouth Pride.

Fowler expects to graduate in 2024 or 2025. In addition to taking classes and performing community work, Fowler provides massage therapy in his family business, Fowler Chiropractic in Amesbury, Massachusetts. “I am the soon-to-be third-generation owner of the establishment,” he said. “I have a family business to run. That’s why I enrolled. I have to know how to run a business and market a brand, so I am seeking an education and support from Great Bay.”

Adam Hoskin named Portsmouth High School Trig Star for 2023

PORTSMOUTH — Adam Hoskin of Rye was named Portsmouth High School Trig-Star for 2023 at the Trig-Star competition held recently at Portsmouth High School. This is his second year winning the title. Hoskin is the son of Allison Rudman-Hoskin. Hoskin is eligible to compete for the New Hampshire title. Trig-Star is a mathematics competition with awards sponsored by land surveyors throughout the country to determine the most highly skilled high school students in the practical application of trigonometry. It features solving real-world problems encountered in the survey field. John Chagnon of Ambit Engineering was the local contest sponsor.

Katalina Abell named Marshwood High School Trig-Star for 2023

SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — Katalina Abell of South Berwick was named Marshwood High School Trig-Star for 2023 at the Trig-Star competition held recently at Marshwood High School. Abell is the daughter of Russ and Mimi Abell. Abell is eligible to compete for the Maine titl. John Chagnon of Ambit Engineering was the local contest sponsor.

Elks 1393 awards scholarships to four Rochester students

ROCHESTER — The Rochester Elks Lodge 1393 presented the first local scholarships in its 102-year history at the Spaulding High School awards night on Wednesday May 17. The Rochester Elks Scholarship fund was established in August 2022, and because of generous donations by our membership along with fundraising activities, lodge representatives were able to present these awards to four well-deserved Spaulding High School seniors.

Scholarships awarded were for $1,200 each to the following Spaulding High School seniors: Amy Powers, Colin Bissonnette, Haley Faucher and Kendall Gadbois.

The scholarships were awarded based on family membership in the Rochester Elks lodge along with consideration and evaluation of the students’ high academics, leadership, community service, and citizenship.        `

Members of the newly established scholarship committee are Jerry Skidds, chairman, Cindy Skidds, Sue Cook, Kelly (Cook) Kasprzyk, Don Martin, Patty Taylor, Dennis Dube and Don Abbott.
