FEMA sends $44M to 9 Central Mass. colleges for COVID-19 costs including $9.7M to MCPHS

Nine Central Massachusetts colleges received more than $44 million in reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for COVID-19 testing and personal protective equipment during the pandemic.

The reimbursement, for costs between January 2020 and May 2022, also covered the purchasing of equipment such as tents and signage, contracting for cleaning services and the setting up of websites where students and staff could report symptoms and receive test results.

The largest amount of funding went to the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at  $9,705,035.88. However, FEMA said that total is not specific to the Worcester campus. MCPHS also has a campus in Boston.

The smallest amount of funding went to Anna Maria College, which received $1,593,306.84.

Below is the list of Central Massachusetts colleges that received reimbursement from the agency, according to FEMA:

  • Assumption University – $3,224,578.11

  • Clark University – $4,648,765.40

  • College of the Holy Cross – $8,032,391.56

  • MCPHS – $9,705,035.88

  • Nichols College – $2,074,319.90

  • University of Massachusetts Medical School – $4,516,278.64

  • Worcester Polytechnic Institute – $8,738,827.52

  • Worcester State University – $1,633,782.66

FEMA said Fitchburg State University is an active applicant, but has not submitted “any projects.” Mount Wachusett and Quinsigamond community colleges are not active applicants, the agency said.
