Female lion dies days after her mate, Illinois zoo says. ‘It’s been very traumatic’

A female African lion in Illinois died Tuesday just 12 days after her mate, Brookfield Zoo says.

All was well with 14-year-old Isis when zoo staff checked on her in her habitat around 9 a.m. Monday, Brookfield Zoo said in a Facebook post. When they stopped by again, Isis was lying at the bottom of the moat.

The moat was more than 15 feet deep, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Zoo staff believe Isis fell, according to the post. After intensive treatment, she was “humanely euthanized” the next day.

“The safety and well-being of the animals in our care is our utmost priority,” the zoo said. “Although it is unclear what caused her fall, we are reviewing all aspects of this tragic occurrence.”

Isis’ death comes only days after the death of her mate Zenda, who was put down for age-related issues, WLS reported.

Zenda was 13 years old and had trouble standing and walking, according to the outlet.

Isis and Zenda arrived at Brookfield Zoo in May 2008 and often groomed one another and slept side-by-side, the zoo said.

“Isis and Zenda were majestic animals who had a strong bond,” the zoo said in the post.

Zoo staff say they’re trying to make sense of the tragedy.

“Right now it’s just a tragic accident and we’re trying to make heads or tails of it,” William Zeigler, senior vice president of animal programs, told the Chicago Tribune. “It’s been very traumatic having to deal with Zenda and now having to deal with this loss, which was totally unexpected. The animal-care staff is so bonded with their cats, it’s like you with a house cat. It’s been hard for them.”
