Fernando Macias out as Doña Ana county manager in 2024

The Doña Ana Coard of County Commissioners voted Tuesday to end County Manager Fernando Macias' contract next year.

The vote followed a four-hour discussion in a closed session. The vote sets Macias' last day as county manager as April 30, 2024. Two weeks before the vote, commissions voted 3-2 to amend Macias' evaluation process, something he protested.

Commissioners Manny Sanchez of District 5, Shannon Reynolds of District 3 and Christopher Schaljo-Hernandez of District 1 voted to allow elected officials (such as the county clerk, sheriff, and assessor) to participate in Macais' yearly evaluation. Macias said he opposed this.

Macias must agree to his evaluation process as part of his contract.

On Tuesday, the vote to end Macias' contract was unanimous. Sanchez, Reynolds, and Schaljo-Hernandez were joined by Susana Chaparro of District 4 and Diana Murillo of District 2.

Little was said publicly after the four hours of closed-session discussion. Chaparro thanked Macias but did not specify what she was thanking him for.
