Ferris State sweeps basketball games against Lakers

BIG RAPIDS — Lake Superior State stayed close for a half, but could’t keep pace with GLIAC men’s basketball leader Ferris State Thursday night.

The Bulldogs had six players in double figures and used a big second half effort as they registered a 95-80 win over the Lakers at Jim Wink Arena.

Malek Adams scored 19 points, David Wren added 16 points, Justin Fischer had 13 points and Kemon Bassett had 11 to lead the Lakers (9-5 overall, 4-4 GLIAC).

The Lakers finished with a 45 percent shooting percentage, going 27-for-60 in the game.

Lake State led by as many as 11 points in the first half before the Bulldogs rallied to take a 43-39 lead into the locker room.

Senior guard Walt Kelser scored 15 for the Bulldogs, including 13 in the second half as Ferris State outscored the Lakers 52-41 over the final 20 minutes. Seniors Lee Higgins and Dorian Aluyi along with Ben Davidson each added 13 points apiece for FSU.

Ferris State (13-3 overall, 8-0 GLIAC), ranked No. 24 in Division II, shot 50 percent from the floor and held a decisive 50-28 rebounding margin.

Ferris State 90, LSSU 38

The Lake Superior State women’s basketball team fell 90-38 against Ferris State Thursday night.

Mattison Rayman led the Lakers (2-9 overall, 1-4 GLIAC) with 13 points and nine rebound, while Makenzie Bray added 12 points.

FSU dominated play from the outset, building a 29-13 edge after the opening period, and never looked back in improving to 13-4 overall and 7-2 GLIAC.

The Lakers finished the game with a 36.6 shooting percentage, going 15-for-41.

FSU was led by senior guard Adrienne Anderson's 16 points.The Bulldogs shot 35-for-68 overall from the field (51.5 percent). Ferris State out-rebounded Lake State, 37-26.

The LSSU women’s and men’s teams return home to play Northwood Saturday. The women’s game is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by the men’s game at approximately 3 p.m. at Bud Cooper Gymnasium.
