Fertile-Beltrami advances while Kittson County Central, Mahnomen-Waubun fall

Nov. 12—GRAND FORKS — One area Minnesota high school football team advanced Friday in the opening round of the Minnesota state high school football playoffs while two others saw their seasons come to an end.

Fertile-Beltrami beat Ogilvie 22-6 in the Minnesota 9-man state quarterfinals at Grand Rapids High School.

The Falcons advance to the state semifinals on Thursday at 1 p.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Fertile-Beltrami will play Section 1 winner Spring Grove, a 40-22 winner over Hancock in a state quarterfinal Thursday.

In another 9-man quarterfinal on Friday, Kittson County Central fell 42-28 to Mountain Iron-Buhl in Moorhead. The Bearcats pulled within a score in the final five minutes before MI-B pulled back out front.

In Class A action, Mahnomen-Waubun fell 26-14 to Deer River in Brainerd. Mahnomen-Waubun led 14-0 early in the second quarter before Deer River rattled off 26 unanswered points.

For Fertile-Beltrami, the Falcons were held to a season-low point total of 22. Previously, Fertile-Beltrami had scored at least 30 points in every game.

But the Falcons' defense continued their strong play. The Falcons haven't given up more than 14 points in a game this year while throwing three shutouts.

Fertile-Beltrami sophomore Isaiah Wright scored on a 40-yard pass from Caiden Swenby in the first quarter, while Derek Sorenson scored on a 9-yard pass in the second quarter.

After Ogilvie pulled within 16-6 in the third quarter, Swenby's 8-yard run in the fourth quarter put the game on ice.
