A rhythm and gospel fest honoring Dr. Rance Allen, the late bishop and gospel music legend from Monroe, and the Rance Allen Group band, will take place July 3, from 2-8 p.m. in Montague Park in the City of Monroe.

Dubbed the Rance Allen Group Way Street Takeover, the event will feature food, entertainment and vendors at the park located at 626 Almyra Ave., on the very street where Allen and his brothers, Tom and Steve, grew up and formed their now-legendary musical group back in 1969.

The band’s honors over the years included a listing in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum, three Grammy Award nominations, and winning the Stellar Gospel Music Award.

At the event, Monroe Mayor Robert Clark will read a proclamation officially naming July 3, 2022 as The Rance Allen Group Day.

"It‘s a great honor for the city and its residents to be able to recognize the Rance Allen Group, and the significant contributions they've made to the Monroe community since their early beginnings through their gospel music industry, and throughout the internationally-renowned career that they’ve had," Clark said at Monday's Monroe City Council meeting. "I look forward to presenting (the resolution), and hope (the entire city council) can attend, as well as the community, so we can continue that recognition."
