Festival season begins

‘Tis the season to plan ahead. Festival season is gearing up and ticketed events abound. But there are still lots of “decide at the last minute” things to do, both indoors and out. Starry Nights programs are at Roper Mountain Science Center Sept. 8. “Legends of the Night Sky” is at 4:30 p.m., “Cosmic Colors” is at 6 p.m. and “Ultimate Universe” is at 7:30 p.m. Advance ticket purchases are required. For details, visit ropermountain.org.

Autumn at Oz is at Land of Oz in Beech Mountain, North Carolina Sept. 8 – 10, 15 – 17, and 22 – 24. This event combines a festival atmosphere with an interactive, immersive theatrical experience. Guests walk onto the Gale’s Kansas farm, visit Aunt Em and Uncle Henry’s Home, escape into the newly renovated Tornado Storm Cellar, and walk out on the Yellow Brick Road into the world of Oz. The Upstate Renaissance Faire is Sept. 8 – 9 at Greer City Park. Saturday’s events include a tournament with Sword Carolina, the Columbia Marionettes, jesters, wrestlers, Fight-a-Knight, mermaids and more. Mini Makers: Arts Lead Learning is 9 – 10 a.m. Sept. 12 at TR Makers Co. Recommended for ages 2 – 5 with a grown-up. Stations and activities build on the four core goals of the Mini Makers program: encouraging creative play, social interactions and community building, educational development, and developing fine and gross motor skills. Splash and Bubbles: Dive In, Lend a Fin opens Sept. 23 at the Upcountry History Museum. Join Splash, Bubbles, and the Reeftown Rangers in exploring marine biology, ocean science and different ocean ecosystems. The exhibit continues through Feb. 4, 2024.
