Oct. 25—HARRISBURG — Through spokespeople, social media and television attack ads, Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz have said a lot about one another.

On Tuesday night, they'll say it directly to each other in the lone debate for the U.S. Senate election in Pennsylvania.

The hour-long debate will be broadcast live by host Nexstar Television beginning at 8 p.m.

WHTM ABC27 News anchor Dennis Owens and WPXI anchor Lisa Sylvester will be the moderators.

The Nov. 8 midterm election is two weeks away and the outcome in the Keystone State could determine which of the two major parties controls the upper house of Congress. The victor would join Democrat Bob Casey Jr. as the Commonwealth's senators, succeeding Republican Pat Toomey, who is retiring from public office after two terms.

Also on the ballot are the Libertarian Party's Erik Gerhardt, the Green Party's Richard Weiss and the Keystone Party's Daniel Wassmer.

Fetterman, Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor, held a wide lead in public opinion polling entering the fall. Oz has since rebounded to make the race tight. The Real Clear Politics average of varied political polls showed Fetterman with a 2.2-point advantage.

The Oz campaign continues attempts to sow doubt about Fetterman's health and capability to serve. The Democrat suffered a near-fatal stroke just days ahead of the May primary election, keeping him off the campaign trail for months and, for a long spell, positioning his campaign as primarily digital.

Fetterman's doctor last week issued a note, shared publicly by the candidate's campaign, acknowledging symptoms of auditory processing disorder that can come across as a hearing difficulty.

However, the doctor wrote that Fetterman's communication improved significantly, that he's continuing speech therapy and following up with his health team, and that he has no work restrictions and can take on "full duty" for public office.
