Fetterman’s slob act is a symbol of what government has become

Hey, Pennsylvania voters, you must be so proud! The guy you elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022 is not only unable to string two sentences together, but has also given the country, it’s history and traditions, and the institution of the Senate itself a big middle finger by deciding that he will show up to do the people’s work looking like a slob, wearing a hoodie and shorts.

Now, that might seem to be alright with some people in a society where many don’t seem to care about decorum in any setting and where it’s cool to come to church wearing dirty jeans and a T-Shirt, but it is a symptom of a larger societal problem that has carried over into government.

The problem isn’t really John Fetterman, a cipher whose sole accomplishment is to take from Bob Casey Jr. the title as the most feckless U.S. senator in the history of Pennsylvania, but the attitude that engendered his little rebellion against good taste and decorum.

Fetterman is actually and probably unintentionally making a valid point with his show of selfishness and disrespect, in that the U.S. Senate, and with it, the entire government apparatus, is a clown show run and populated by a collection of the sick, lame and lazy who don’t deserve respect.

You don’t have to look far in the Senate for examples, such as 90-year-old California Democrat, Diane Feinstein, who in a recent video, had to be told by her staff what to say and how to vote in a committee meeting. Or “Republican" Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has frozen up twice while being questioned by reporters.

Aside from the health and age problems, there are of course senators like Democrat Bob Menendez of New Jersey, who is now under indictment along with his wife, for bribery and other offenses.

More: Half of Senate Democrats want Menendez to leave after bribery, corruption charges.

Menendez was actually caught with stacks of hundred-dollar bills and gold bars stored in his home, which shows that he should have sought the advice from a prominent former U.S. senator on how to properly launder political bribes through phony shell companies and numerous bank accounts belonging to family members.

Not to be outdone, the present executive branch of the government is populated with arguably the most incompetent group of cabinet officers ever assembled, and that’s what happens when you hire people, not based on their qualifications, but on their race, gender, sexual preference, or their leftist bona fides.

As a result, we have a Department of Defense that is more interested in DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) than it is national security; a State Department that is now held in contempt both by friends and enemies all over the world; a Homeland Security Department that has thrown our borders wide open; a Transportation Department that cannot manage our transportation systems; an Energy Department that opposes American energy production; and Treasury, Commerce and other departments who just plain stink at their jobs.

Worst of all, we have a Justice Department that is overseen by a leftwing apparatchik named Merrick Garland, who, based on his last appearance before congress, is either totally clueless or the biggest liar in history. One thing is clear, though. The Biden Department of Justice seems intent to give the Biden family a “get out of jail card” while relentlessly pursuing our once and future president, Donald Trump.

It’s not surprising that the executive branch is in shambles when you look at the guy who is supposed to be in charge of it. It’s becoming increasingly apparent that Joe Biden is unfit for his job, because of his obvious cognitive decline and the increasing evidence of apparent corruption that surrounds he and his family.

How bad is it for Biden and the Democrats? The most recent Rasmussen poll shows support for his primary opponent, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., jumping to 25%. Even more significant is an ABC News/Washington Post poll conducted from Sept. 15 to Sept. 20 showing a 37% approval rating for the president and also showing that Donald Trump would beat Joe Biden 52%-42% in the general election.

The alarm bells are going off in Democratic party circles, and it is increasingly difficult for their media allies to rescue them. Maybe they should all, including John Fetterman, put on their big boy clothes and start governing on behalf of the people instead of against them, but that is not what the Democratic Party is all about.

Dwight Weidman is a resident of Greene Township and is a graduate of Shepherd University. He is retired from the United States Department of Defense, where his career included assignments In Europe, Asia, and Central America. He has been in leadership roles for the Republican Party in two states, most recently serving two terms as Chairman of the Franklin County Republican Party. He has been an Amateur Radio Operator since 1988, getting his first license in Germany, and is a past volunteer with both Navy and Army MARS, Military Auxiliary Radio Service, and is also an NRA-certified firearms instructor. In his spare time, he dabbles in genealogy and learning new languages.
