Coroner IDs man killed in Saturday shooting involving Columbus police, Franklin Co. deputy

July 8, 2023; Columbus, Oh., USA; A person has died after a shooting involving at least one Columbus police officer and one Franklin County Sheriff's deputy Saturday evening on the city's East Side. The shooting happened around 8 p.m. in the 3000 and 3100 blocks of East Livingston Avenue, near James Road.

The Franklin County Coroner's office identified a 45-year-old man Wednesday as the person who was killed during what police say was an exchange of gunfire Saturday with Columbus officers and a Franklin County sheriff's deputy.

Antwan Lindsey, 45, of the Southeast Side, died Saturday night at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m. Saturday in the 3100 block of East Livingston Avenue, near James Road.

The situation began when a man approached a Franklin County deputy who was working a special assignment at Walgreens, 3015 E. Livingston Ave. The man told the deputy there was a second man outside, now identified as Lindsey, who was after him and fired gunshots.

The deputy went outside, Chief Deputy Jim Gilbert said, and confronted Lindsey, who then fired at the deputy. A foot chase started that spanned about a block.

Columbus police officers who were in the area also went to the scene, knowing the deputy was under fire, Deputy Chief Tim Myers said Saturday.

Lindsey ran into an apartment building at 3110 E. Livingston Ave., part of the Bexley Commons complex, and shots were exchanged between Lindsey and multiple Columbus officers, Myers said.

Lindsey was pronounced dead at 8:25 p.m. Saturday at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center. No officers or deputies were injured.

Gilbert said the deputy who was working special duty had a marked cruiser parked in the parking lot of the Walgreens and was wearing a body camera.

The names of the officers and deputy involved in the shooting were not being released as of Wednesday afternoon, Columbus police said, because of the recently implemented Marsy's Law. The same reasoning was provided for why the names of officers involved in Thursday's shooting that injured a Columbus officer and left a suspect dead were not released.

Four officers were involved in Saturday's shooting, with two, eight, nine and 10 years of service, respectively, police said. The sheriff's deputy who was involved has been a deputy for 19 years.

Body camera video from the shooting, which The Dispatch has requested, has not yet been released.
