A few inches fall as storm lumbers on, no major problems reported

Mar. 14—Between one and four inches has fallen in Lackawanna County as a snowstorm lumbered through the region, the National Weather Service said.

By the early afternoon, a measurement in Vandling of four inches of snow was the largest unofficial total reported, meteorologist Ben Lott said. Much of Northeast Pennsylvania remains under a winter storm warning until 6 p.m.

The snow has not caused much of an issue for emergency responders, 911 supervisors said. Truck drivers getting stuck on steep inclines posed the biggest issue.

"I don't want to jinx myself," said 911 Director Al Kearney.

In Scranton, police responded to two crashes, likely caused by the weather, Capt. Dennis Lukasewicz said. Neither crash involved an injury.

By 1:30 p.m., 127 PPL Electric Utilities customers were without power in Lackawanna County. Most of them — 99 — live in Carbondale Twp. They were expected to have power restored by 7 p.m.

By the evening, the snow is expected to taper off into overnight flurries. Temperatures near 40 on Wednesday and around 50 on Thursday guarantees that whatever sticks will soon disappear.

While Lott said this snowstorm is "certainly the best" seen so far this season, that does not mean much.

"So far this winter has been underwhelming as far as winter events go," he said.
