DISCUSSION FFA members, accompanied by vocational agriculture teachers Abbey VanTyne and Catie Noyes, highlighted their recent trip to the national convention in October in Indianapolis with a slide show, and thanked the school board for its support. Norwayne's FFA chapter was awarded a three-star gold rating. Norwayne's first national proficiency winner is 2022 graduate Halle Miller, who placed first in her division in small animal entrepreneurship. Five Norwayne students — Miller, Caitlyn DeMassimo, Tim Gunkelman, Kendra Marty and Ellyssa Simmons — earned their American FFA degrees, a distinction only 2% of FFA members achieve, said Superintendent Kevin Leatherman.

  • The high school's annual fall benefit raised more than $32,000 for the Ralph Stanley family to help with medical expenses. The fundraiser, held each year before Thanksgiving, includes dinner and a live and silent auction, Leatherman said. The Stanley family is known in the community and was nominated to be the beneficiary of the fundraising effort.

  • The board recognized Norwayne Elementary fifth grader Easton Tarleton for earning the Young Authors Excellence Award from Tri-County Educational Service Center.

  • Jolen Shaum-Hildebrand, assistant treasurer, will retire on Dec. 27, following 30 years of service to the Norwayne district.
