FGCU men's basketball has home opener vs. Ave Maria, women travel to FIU on Sunday

The FGCU men's basketball team will enjoy its home opener Sunday against NAIA program Ave Maria. The women's team will hit the road for the first time, heading to Miami to play FIU. Here's a look at both games.

What to know – Ave Maria: The NAIA Gyrenes were 2-1 heading into Saturday's game against Southeastern. Ave Maria went 21-11 last season. Gulf Coast High graduate Klajd Kiri is a senior, transferring in as a junior from Huntington, Ind., and is averaging 9 points and 7.7 rebounds through three games. Matt Gillis leads the team in scoring, averaging 13 points per game. FGCU: The Eagles went 1-1 on their season-opening California swing, opening with a win at USC 74-61 Monday before falling to San Diego Wednesday 79-73. This will be head coach Pat Chambers' home debut for FGCU. Charles Johnston is leading the Eagles in scoring after two games, averaging 27.5 points. Isiah Thompson and Zach Anderson are also averaging double-digit scoring at 10.5.

Women win opener: FGCU women's basketball opens up 2022-23 regular season with 81-62 win over Old Dominion

What to know – FGCU: The Eagles have never lost to FIU in 13 tries and last played in 2020, an 80-66 FGCU win at Alico Arena. Tishara Morehouse led all scorers with 24 points to help lead the Eagles to an 81-62 victory over Old Dominion Monday. Morehouse scored her 1,000th career point in the game. Alyza Winston added 22 points and Sha Carter pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. FIU: The Panthers won their first game 103-56 over North Carolina Central. Redshirt freshman Sifa Joyeuse led the way in the opener with 21 points and nine rebounds followed by Kaliah Henderson's 19 points. FIU went 15-16 last season and 6-12 in Conference USA.
