FHP: Jupiter woman on foot struck and killed by van in Martin County

MARTIN COUNTY — A Jupiter woman walking across U.S. 1 was struck and killed by a van driven by a Port St. Lucie motorist Friday in southern Martin County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The investigation for the crash is ongoing.

The collision happened shortly after 7 p.m. north of County Line Road, just north of Palm Beach County,

The van driver was a 41-year-old Port St Lucie woman, FHP said. She was traveling north when the collision happened.

The 51-year-old woman, who had been walking east on U.S. 1, was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

FHP did not release the names of either woman, citing Marsy’s Law, passed in 2018.

Introduced in memory of a young woman murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Marsy’s Law was created to offer crime victims a slate of rights, including protecting them and their families from harassment by their attackers.

Some law enforcement officials have interpreted the statute as applying to any victim, as well as to law enforcement officers being entitled to privacy and having their identity protected.
