FHP: One person killed in a two-vehicle crash at U.S. 301 and CR 318 in Citra

CITRA — Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a crash killed one person on Tuesday. Here's what we know:

Where: At the intersection of County Road 318 and North U.S. 301 in Citra.

What happened? FHP officials on scene said a semitractor-trailer was northbound on U.S. 301 in the right lane.

An older model pickup truck was eastbound on CR 318.

Troopers said the pickup entered the intersection and into the path of the big rig. Upon impact, both vehicles stopped roughly half a mile from the intersection.

At this point, it appears the pickup driver ran the stoplight at the intersection, troopers said. The crash is still under investigation.

First responders: Marion County Fire Rescue spokesman James Lucas said his agency was dispatched at 1:10 p.m. and arrived at 1:15 p.m. One person was pronounced deceased at 1:22 p.m.

Arrest: Major drug bust started when FHP stopped a rental van on I-75 north of Ocala.

Drivers: Troopers identified the deceased as the pickup driver, an 83-year-old man from Ocala. The semi driver is from Benson, North Carolina and is 42. He had no injuries, troopers said. The agency no longer provide names of those involved in crashes.

Since Aug. 25, law enforcement officials have recorded six traffic deaths throughout Marion County. Four of the traffic deaths occurred in the county and are being investigated by the FHP. The remaining two fatalities were in the city of Ocala and are being investigated by the Ocala Police Department.
