A 40-year-old Ormond Beach man was killed in a crash at the roundabout at U.S. 1 and Old Dixie Highway in Flagler County early Wednesday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly wrote in a text that, to his knowledge, this was the first fatal accident at the roundabout since it opened in 2020. He texted that statistically, the roundabout appears to be safer.

The single-vehicle crash was reported about 1:45 a.m., FHP stated. The sedan was northbound on U.S. 1 when the driver lost control and the vehicle traveled through the roundabout, overturning several times before hitting a tree, the FHP stated.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, the FHP stated.

Deadly crash: 5 people die in crash at Old Dixie Highway and U.S. 1

The roundabout was built in hopes of making what statistics showed as one of the county's most dangerous crossroads less risky. In February 2017, a pickup truck slammed into an SUV attempting to turn onto U.S. 1 from Old Dixie Highway. The crash killed all five South Florida passengers in the SUV.

Before the roundabout, the T-intersection had only a stop sign and flashing lights for traffic entering U.S. 1 from Old Dixie Highway.

The FDOT built another roundabout 16 miles north on U.S. 1 at Matanzas Woods Parkway.
