FHP: Three killed in two separate deadly crashes in Clay County on US-17 North
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to two separate deadly crashes in Clay County on Friday. Both crashes happened around 5:10 p.m. on U.S. 17 northbound between County Road 220 and Creighton Road.
Three people were pronounced deceased due to the crashes, FHP confirmed.
According to one crash report, one of the victims who died was a 77-year-old Middleburg woman.
The woman drove a sedan and was making a left turn at 4689 U.S. 17 when she failed to yield the right of way and crashed into a pickup truck, FHP says. The two occupants in the pickup truck were uninjured.
The other crash report confirmed a 56-year-old man from Fleming Island and a 38-year-old man from Middleburg had died.
The 56-year-old man was traveling southbound on U.S. 17 north of Raggedy Point Drive while the 38-year-old man was traveling northbound on U.S. 17 in the same area. The 56-year-old man lost control of the sports vehicle he was driving for an unknown reason, FHP says, and crossed into the northbound lanes and onto the outside shoulder.
He then steered back into the roadway and collided with the van that the 38-year-old man was driving.
None of the victims have been fully identified.
U.S. 17 northbound was closed between County Road 220 and Creighton Road due to the two crashes. The lanes have now been reopened.
This is a developing story that will be updated once more information becomes available.
FHP is currently working two (2) separate fatal crashes in Clay County. Both are on US 17 northbound between CR 220 and Creighton Road. A total of three occupants were pronounced deceased on scene. One other occupant was transported to a local hospital.
