FHSAA tennis previews: How will Northeast Florida teams fare at 2023 high school finals?

Boys state tennis championships

Class 3A

When: Monday-Wednesday.

Where: Sanlando Park, Altamonte Springs.

Individual qualifiers: Doubles, Reef Davis & Jonas Boyd (Fletcher).

Team qualifiers: Ponte Vedra.

Glance: Can the Sharks repeat? Many of the names have changed from the 2022 state champion team, but Grant Price and Ponte Vedra are carrying weeks of momentum into Monday morning's quarterfinal against Gulf Breeze.

Class 1A

When: Monday-Wednesday.

Where: Red Bug Lake Park, Casselberry (team); Sylvan Lake Park, Sanford (individuals).

Individual qualifiers: Singles, Chase Healey (Christ's Church); doubles, Chase Healey & Caleb Shepler (Christ's Church).

Team qualifiers: Episcopal.

Glance: The chase for history is on. Eagles senior Healey is pursuing his third consecutive FHSAA boys singles title, a feat attained only six times. The Episcopal boys could make some noise of their own, entering with an 18-1 season record.

Class 4A

When: Wednesday-Friday.

Where: Sanlando Park, Altamonte Springs.

Individual qualifiers: Singles, Aryan Gupta (Creekside); doubles, Aryan Gupta & Jack Walzer (Creekside).

Team qualifiers: None.

Glance: The Creekside contingent will be the First Coast's only change for trophies in Class 4A.

Class 2A

When: Wednesday-Friday

Where: Red Bug Lake Park, Casselberry (team); Sylvan Lake Park, Sanford (individuals).

Individual qualifiers: Singles, Akhil Chedde (Stanton); Max Pisani & Henry Colwell (Fernandina Beach).

Team qualifiers: Bolles.

Glance: Three Northeast Florida schools are in action here. Anik Desai and Michael Zhang have been reliable scorers for a Bolles squad noted for its depth.

Girls state tennis championships

Class 3A

When: Monday-Wednesday.

Where: Sanlando Park, Altamonte Springs.

Individual qualifiers: Singles, Althea Tabora (Oakleaf).

Team qualifiers: Ponte Vedra.

Glance: After dropping three of their first four contests this year, the Sharks have picked up the pace, particularly excelling at Nos. 3-5 singles. Keep an eye on Oakleaf's Tabora in the individual bracket.

Class 1A

When: Monday-Wednesday.

Where: Red Bug Lake Park, Casselberry (team); Sylvan Lake Park, Sanford (individuals).

Individual qualifiers: Singles, Stella Hyatt (St. Johns Country Day); Doubles, Stella Hyatt & Calli Berrang (St. Johns Country Day).

Team qualifiers: None.

Glance: The Spartans could be dangerous in the individual brackets, where Hyatt completed the season with a 25-2 combined record for singles and doubles.

Class 4A

When: Wednesday-Friday

Where: Sanlando Park, Altamonte Springs.

Individual qualifiers: Singles, Kylie Kochis (Nease); doubles, Kylie Kochis & Blair Murray (Nease).

Team qualifiers: None.

Glance: Sophomore Kochis has been exceptionally strong through two years at Nease, with her only losses this year coming against Spruce Creek.

Class 2A

When: Wednesday-Friday.

Where: Red Bug Lake Park, Casselberry (team); Sylvan Lake Park, Sanford (individuals).

Individual qualifiers: Singles, Katie Wong (Stanton); doubles, Katie Wong & Emma Ferguson (Stanton).

Team qualifiers: Bolles.

Glance: This could be a memorable week for Bolles, undefeated against Florida opposition in 2023. Starting with Katrina Kirov at No. 1 singles, the lineup's top-to-bottom strength has been the best on the First Coast all year. Stanton's Wong and Ferguson went undefeated in regular-season doubles play and might contend in the individual bracket.
