Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin casts ballot in Ireland's general election

Micheal Martin arrived at the polling station with his family at St. Anthony's Boy's National School in Ballinlough, Cork.

Saturday's vote could wrest power away from both the ruling Fine Gael and Fianna Fail, which have essentially handed control back and forth since the foundation of the Republic in 1937.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar faces a challenge to hold onto power after his Fine Gael party came third in an opinion poll on earlier this week.

Whether he manages to hold on or not, both he and Martin have ruled out going into coalition with centre-left republicans Sinn Fein who are expected to make gains after topping Monday's poll.
