Fiddle Fest and what's next: Here are can't-miss musical events coming up

The sound of bluegrass music filled the air Saturday during the Fiddle Fest and Southeastern Fiddle Championship at Shelton State Community College.

The festival featured arts, crafts, food vendors, a vintage car show and other family friendly activities, along with and the seventh annual Southeastern Fiddle Championship, which awarded more than $7,500 in prize money.

  • Open fiddle finals:  First place, Trustin Baker of Birch Tree, Missouri; second place, Justin Branum; third place, Kerry Varble, fourth place, Tyler Andal; fifth place, Lauren Clardy.

  • Senior fiddle: First place, David Wascher of Ashland City, Tennessee; second place,  Brent Young; third place Rickey Kilgore; fourth place, William Wascher; fifth place, Kathi Stafford.

  • Junior fiddle: First place, Noah Goebel of  Elkton, Kentucky; second place, Mary Parker; third place, Gordon Parker; fourth place,  Macy Morrison; fifth place, Ezekiel Baker.

  • Youth fiddle: First place, Charlene Parker of Mountain View, Arkansas; second place, Lilly Coleman; third place, Ty McMeans; fourth place, Ivy Bahro;  fifth place, Reagan Brown.

  • Small fry fiddle: First place,  Nora Mae Marchant of  West Blocton; second place, Carlee Watkins;  third place, Kate Coleman; fourth place, Kade Stewart.

  • Mandolin: First place,  Justin Branum of  Murfreesboro, Tennessee; second place, Noah Goebel; third place Tyler Andal; fourth place, Carrina Baker; fifth place Aaron Koch.

  • Guitar: First place,  Tyler Andal of Nashville, Tennessee; second place, Justin Koch; third place, Elijah Baker; fourth place, Trustin Baker; fifth place, Noah Goebel

  • Banjo: First place, Tyler Andal of  Nashville, Tennessee; second place, Michael Johnson; third place, Trustin Baker; fourth place, Conner McMeans; fifth place, Noah Goebel.

  • Beginner musicians: First place, Reagan Brown of Springfield, Tennessee; second place, Alaina Knight; third place, Shelby Putz; fourth place, Jake Atherton; fifth place (tie) Ty McMeans/Miriam Crownover.

  • Buck dancing/clogging: First place, Amelia Brown of Springfield, Tennessee; second place, Mary Parker; third place,  Reagan Brown; fourth place, Gordon Parker; fifth place, Carrina Baker

  • Bluegrass band competition: First place, the Baker Family of Birch Tree, Missouri; second place, Weary Heart; third place, Keep It Lonesome; fourth place, Tri State Ramblers

Organizers said the Fiddle Fest was designed to maintain the traditions of bluegrass and old-time fiddle music.

Here's a look at other music festivals coming up in Tuscaloosa:

DCH music festival

No. 1: DCH Health System is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a free concert Saturday at the new River District Park, 180 Greensboro Ave., next to the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater. The Locals kick things off at 2 p.m., followed by Cashback at 3:30, Adam Hood at 5 and the Powell Brothers at 6:30. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs. The festival will also include face painting and food and drink vendors.

TSO Young Persons' Concert

No. 2: The Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra will join forces with students from the Alberta School of Performing Arts and the Fine Arts Academy at Paul W. Bryant High School for its Young Persons' Concert. The concert is scheduled for 4 p.m. March 26 in the concert Hall at the Moody Music Building, 810 Second Ave. on the University of Alabama campus. Admission is $30. The theme is "Give Me Space. To learn more, go to www.tsoonline.org.

Druid City Arts Festival

No. 3: Although arts and crafts are the focus of the Druid City Arts Festival, the event will also feature plenty of live music. This year's festival is set for 5-9 p.m. March 31 and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. April 1 at Government Plaza, 2106 Sixth St. in downtown Tuscaloosa. Admission is free.
