Fifth Formula 1 Driver Tests Positive for COVID-19

Ferrari Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc has tested postive for COVID-19.

Leclerc made the announcement Thursday on Twitter.

"I am regularly checked according to my team's protocals," Leclerc said in the tweet. "Unfortunately, I learned that I have been in contact with a positive case and immediately went into self isolation, notifying anyone I had contact with. A subsequent test I took came back positive."

Leclerc becomes the fifth F1 driver to test positive for the virus. Sergio Perez missed two races earlier this season after a positive test, while Lance Stroll and Lewis Hamilton also missed a race after a COVID-19 positive. Earlier in January, Lando Norris announced that he, too, had tested positive.

The positive tests to start out 2021 coincide with Formula 1's postponement of early-season races in Australia and China. The F1 season is currently scheduled to begin in Bahrain on March 28.
