Fifth man Cooper Garrison propels Wapello to boys state golf meet

A high school boys golf team's score is determined by its top four players, but Wapello's Cooper Garrison proved the value of the fifth man at the Class 1A District Tournament at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City Monday.

Wapello and Earlham tied for second place with 373s, but only one could advance to the state tournament May 23-24 at Ames Golf and Country Club.

To break the tie, the two teams' fifth golfers' scores were compared. Wapello's Garrison beat Earlham's Braden Hamilton, 95-103.

Wapello will be joining district champion English Valleys at the state tournament. English Valleys won the district with 370 strokes.

Individuals advancing are medalist Ryan Stiles of Earlham, who carded an 83, and runner-up medalist Jace Rempel of Hillcrest Academy. Rempel shot an 84.

For Wapello, Casey Short, Zach Harbison and Matthew McGowan each carded 93s and Dawson Tipps came in at 94.

Earlham was awarded third place and was followed by Keota (376), Hillcrest Academy (381), North Mahaska (392), Lynnville-Sully (393), New London (416), Wayne (431), Sigourney (433) and Highland (442).

Winfield-Mount Union's Carter Loyd and Jake Edwards, who qualified for the district as individuals, both carded a 98 and finished in a seven-way tie for 22nd.

Playing for New London were Ethan Streeter (103), Weston Miller (103), Wyatt Miller (105) and Coen Fitzpatrick (105).

ALLEN, MATHENEY FALL SHORT: Notre Dame-West Burlington senior Kaleb Allen and Mount Pleasant junior Nick Matheney each took one shot too many at the Class 3A district tournament at Wildcat Golf Course in Shellsburg.

The cutoff for individuals advancing to the state tournament was 79 strokes. Allen and Matheney each carded an 80.

Solon won the team title with 315 strokes, 32 better than runner-up Washington. Both teams advance to the state tournament May 23-24 at Veenker Memorial Golf Course on the Iowa State University campus in Ames. Individuals heading to state are medalist Isaiah Zoske of Marion, who shot a 75, and Maquoketa's Noah Nabb who carded a 79.

Other teams competing were Marion (349), West Delaware (352) and host Vinton-Shellsburg (368).

WEST BRANCH WINS 2A: West Branch won the Class 2A district at Wapello's Heritage Oaks golf course with 325 strokes and Dyersville Beckman took second, just a stroke behind.

Both teams advance to the state tournament May 22-23 at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames.

Advancing as individuals are Iowa City Regina's Mikey Takacs, who carded a 77, and three players who shot 78s — MFL's Nick Krambeer and New Hampton's Mason Lane and Kyler Glenn.

Beckman's Nate Offerman and West Branch's Dylan Countryman shared medalist honors after each carded a 4-over 76.

Mediapolis had three golfers entered in the district., Ben Wolter tied for 28th with a 90, Jacob Grier was 51st at 100 and Kamden Stotlar tied for 52nd with a 101, All three are sophomores.

New Hampton finished third in the team standings with a 339 and was followed by Tipton (348), Monticello (349), MFL-MarMac (359), Waterloo Columbus (361), Regina (375) and Wapsie Valley (375).

BOYS SOCCER

NO. 5 ND-WB 9, MOUNT PLEASANT 0: Parker Davis had three goals and four assists to lead Class 1A's fifth-ranked Notre Dame-West Burlington to victory at Mount Pleasant's East Lake Park.

The Nikes' Cole Ward and Carson Wagner scored two goals each and Gabe Zurita and Bobby Willdrick each added a goal. Hunter Lillie, Seena Nowroozi and Zurita each had an assist. Goalkeeper Arya Nowroozi earned the shutout with three saves.

ND-WB (14-3) ends the regular season Tuesday, hosting Burlington. Thursday, the Nikes host Wapello in a 7 p.m. first round Class 1A, Region 5 tournament game. Mount Pleasant ended its regular season at 1-15. The Panthers face Fort Madison Friday in the Class 2A, Region 6 first round match at Fort Madison's Baxter Sports Complex.

FORT MADISON 5, MEDIAPOLIS 0: Mitchell Pothitakis scored three goals to lead the Bloodhounds past Mediapolis at Fort Madison's Baxter Sports Complex.

Leif Boeding and Peyton Lambert each scored a goal. Will Gager had three assists and Boeding, Jacob Shottenkirk and Noah Swigart each had an assist. Goalkeeper Reiburn Turnbull picked up the shutout with four saves.

Fort Madison (12-5) enters Class 2A, Region 6 tournament play Thursday, hosting Mount Pleasant (1-15). Mediapolis (10-6) hosts Danville-New London (1-5) Thursday in the Class 1A, Region 5 tourney.

GIRLS SOCCER

ND-WB/D 4, MOUNT PLEASANT 3: Notre Dame-West Burlington/Danville edged Mount Pleasant at East Lake Park in Mount Pleasant.

Andrea Lopreato scored all three of Mount Pleasant's goals. Freshman Charice Auwerda assisted on one. Evelyn Escobar had five saves.

The Nikes (7-7) end the regular season Tuesday night, hosting Burlington. Friday, ND-WB/.D hosts Central DeWitt (4-12) at Tackleson Field in the first round of the Class 2A, Region 8 tournament. Mount Pleasant (8-6) hosts Iowa City Liberty (7-8) Friday in the Class 2A, Region 5 first round.

WEST LIBERTY 9, WAPELLO 0: West Liberty blanked the Arrows in a Class 1A regional first round match at West Liberty.

The Comets advance with a 7-8 record. Wapello ended its season at 1-9.

MEDIAPOLIS 3, KEOKUK 0: The Bullettes won a non-conference match at Keokuk's Calvert Stadium.

Mediapolis (6-9) hosts Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union Wednesday. Keokuk (4-13) plays at Fort Madison Friday.

PREP BASEBALL

M-R 2, ILLINI WEST 1: Justin Brooks pitched a one-hitter and went 3-for-3 at the plate himself to lead Monmouth-Roseville past Illini West in a regional quarterfinal game at Carthage, Illinois.

The Chargers scored an unearned run in the sixth inning, denying a shutout to Brooks. Logan Kissinger had Illini West's only hit, a double. Bradyn Robertson was the losing pitcher. He gave up two runs, only one earned, on seven hits and no walks in seven innings. He struck out nine.

PREP SOFTBALL

MERCER COUNTY 10, ORION 9: Mercer County scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning and walked off with a regional quarterfinal win at Aledo, Illinois.

Winning pitcher Hallie Schreurs aided her own cause with a home run, a single and four RBIs in three plate appearances. Riley King had a triple and two singles. Ava Ruggles and Ellie Smock each had two hits for Mercer County. Ruggles and Kaylee Gray each doubled.

Lainey Kunert led Orion with a 3-for-5 outing. Grace Passno, Ella Sundberg, Hannah Swope and Macy Mizio each had two hits. Swope was the losing pitcher.

Mercer County advances with a 15-13 mark. Orion ended its season at 6-21.
