Fight at Chick-fil-A leaves man covered in cold coffee, then he attacks, Florida cops say

A fight that started at a Florida Chick-fil-A escalated until one man beat the other person behind a Walgreens, deputies said.

Donovan Matthews, 36, got into an argument with a man and woman at a Palm Coast Chick-fil-A on Nov. 18 that grew until one of them threw a cup of cold coffee into Matthews’ vehicle, according to a Nov. 21 news release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and an arrest report obtained by WOGX.

Deputies did not release what started the fight.

After throwing the coffee, the two people left the restaurant in their vehicle, but Matthews followed them, deputies said.

Matthews drove behind them “in an aggressive manner” until he “crashed into the back of (their) vehicle” and they pulled into the parking lot behind a Walgreens, according to the release.

Everyone got out of their vehicles and started arguing before Matthews started to throw punches, deputies said.

He tried to hit the woman in the face, deputies said in the arrest report, according to WOGX, but instead hit the man when he jumped in the way of the strike.

The two men went to the ground, where Matthews continued to beat the other man, the outlet reported.

“Out of fear, the (woman) took an unloaded rifle out of the truck in an attempt to stop Matthews from fighting with the (man),” deputies said in the release.

Deputies arrived and Matthews was taken into custody.

He was charged with two counts of aggravated battery causing bodily harm, simple battery, simple assault and criminal mischief, according to deputies.

Possible charges against the person who threw the cold coffee are pending after being forwarded to the state attorney’s office, the sheriff’s office said.

Palm Coast is about 65 miles south of Jacksonville.
