‘A fighter’: Independence girl remains hospitalized after being struck by Amtrak train

An Independence teen remains unconscious in the hospital after she was struck by a train last week.

Janey Stanfield was struck by an Amtrak train at about 4:15 p.m. Thursday while walking home from a friend’s house, according to a GoFundMe online fundraiser.

She suffered a broke pelvis, broken leg, broken arm and facial fractures as a result. As of Monday, she was still in the ICU with some brain swelling, according to the GoFundMe post.

Janey, who is 14 and a freshman at Van Horn High School, was crossing the tracks just north of Truman Road between Northern and Ash Avenues, her mother told FOX4.

“She’s made very good progress and the neurosurgeon is hopeful for a full recovery,” according to the GoFundMe. “As of now they are waiting to get her into MRI to see her brain. She will eventually come off the sedation slowly as her healing progresses.”

As of Wednesday morning, the GoFundMe had raised about $880. All proceeds will go to supporting Janey and her parents, Andrew Stanfield and Rachel Sisson, during their “healing journey,” according to the online fundraiser.

“She is a wonderful girl who was in an unfathomable accident,” the fundraiser reads. “She brings so much light into people’s lives that she touches and we are proud of her for being a fighter!”
