Film Champaign-Urbana to offer location-hosting workshop later this month

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Film Champaign-Urbana is hosting its first free workshop later this month called “So You Want to be a Film Location?”.

The workshop will be from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Champaign Public Library on Feb. 28. The event is co-hosted with Shatterglass Films and The Line Film Co.

“As our film scene in the Champaign-Urbana area continues to grow, it’s critical that we expand our locations infrastructure to accommodate the needs of productions that we are attracting,” Mark Brown, the Director of Sports, Events, and Film for Experience Champaign-Urbana, said in a news release. “In order to build our database, we first need to educate the community on how the film industry works and what they can expect. It’s critical to our success as a film destination.”

Some topics will include how to photograph properties, what to expect as a location host, and how locations should get paid. The workshop is also interactive to give attendees a simulation of the behind-the-scenes activity on a film set.

The workshop comes after the group announced plans to develop a location database to help film scouts find local places for a shoot. The database is set to launch at the end of February.

Officials ask anyone interested in the workshop to RSVP on the Experience CU’s website due to space limitations.
