The sixth season of Grantchester will be hitting our screens soon, but there's good news for fans who are already craving more. The show has already begun filming for season 7, so more crime-solving goodness is definitely on the way. Here's everything we know so far about the seventh season.

When will season 7 debut?

Filming began on Grantchester season 7 in July 2021, returning the show to its usual summer filming schedule after getting derailed to winter in season 6 due to the pandemic. No announcement has been made as to when the season will premiere on Masterpiece PBS, but given the timeline for previous seasons, it seems likely that we won't be seeing more of the Cambridgeshire crew until 2022.

What is season 7 about?

Though episode details haven't been revealed yet, Masterpiece PBS and ITV did release the following synopsis along with the news that season 7 was filming, which offered some tantalizing hints. Read it in full below.

The series picks up in the long hot summer of 1959 with wedding season in full swing in the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester.

As the Reverend Will Davenport unites happy couples in holy matrimony, Detective Inspector Geordie Keating is busy as ever investigating a range of local murder cases. With a new decade just around the corner, the question of what the future holds is on everyone's minds, not least Will's, but before the 50s roll over into the swinging sixties there are some crimes to solve and some life-changing decisions to be made that might change life in Grantchester forever.

The Cast

In a spot of good news for fans, it appears that Grantchester's core cast will be returning for the next season, including Tom Brittney as Reverend Will Davenport and his crime-solving partner Robson Green as DI Geordie Keating. Other favorites like Tessa Peake-Jones (Mrs. Chapman), Al Weaver (Leonard Finch), Kacey Ainsworth (Cathy Keating), Oliver Dimsdale (Daniel Marlowe), and Nick Brimble (Jack Chapman) have also been announced as returning.

One notable guest star who has been confirmed for season 7 is Charlotte Ritchie, who fans of British TV may recognize as Barbara from Call the Midwife. Though the details about her character have not yet been revealed, photos published in the Daily Mail reveal a very different look from the beloved nurse she played on Call the Midwife, including a curly blonde bob.

And while Tom Brittney will still be sleuthing away as Grantchester's beloved vicar, he's also adding a new role to his resume this season: director. Specifically, he'll be directing episode three of the new season, giving fans one more element to get excited about.

"I’m thrilled to be back on set with my Grantchester family and back in our happy place," Brittney said in a statement. "I’m also absolutely over the moon to be given the opportunity to direct an episode this series, it’s been a life ambition of mine and I can’t wait for the audience to see it (and also I can finally order Robson about!)."

Grantchester is based on a book series

If the wait for season seven feels too long, you can still get your fix with more vicarly sleuthing in The Grantchester Mysteries—a series of six collections of short stories by James Runcie. The books focus on the character Sidney Chambers, who also served as the main character on Grantchester for the first four seasons (played by James Norton) before Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) was introduced. The books were partially inspired by Runcie's father, Robert Runcie, the former Archbishop of Canterbury.
