Filming in Wilmington: Jamie Lynn Spears starring in movie for Paramount+

The movie sequel to a popular Nickelodeon show from the 2000s has begun production in Wilmington, and it's got a famous name in the leading role.

Multiple news and film industry outlets are reporting that "Zoey 102," the sequel to the Nickelodeon show "Zoey 101," has begun production in North Carolina for the Paramount+ streaming service. It stars the actress and singer Jamie Lynn Spears, who is the sister of pop star Britney Spears.

Jamie Lynn Spears is also an executive producer of "Zoey 102." According to a press release from Paramount, the show will premiere later this year.

Only two projects, both unnamed, are currently listed as "in production" on the the website of the North Carolina Film Office. One is listed as shooting in the "Western NC Region," and that one is a Hallmark movie currently filming on location at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville.

The other project is listed as shooting in the "Wilmington Region." The Wilmington Regional Film Commission lists "Electric Love" as being in production, but it's not uncommon for films or TV shows to shoot under working titles or even code names. ("Iron Man 3" famously began production in Wilmington under the title "Caged Heat.")

According to multiple reports, "Zoey 102" is a feature film based on characters from "Zoey 101," an extremely popular series that ran on Nickelodeon in the mid- to late 2000s. It starred Spears as Zoey Brooks, a teenager who is the first girl to attend a previously all-boys boarding school.

Other "Zoey 101" cast members listed on the IMDb page for "Zoey 102" as reprising their roles for the film are: Erin Sanders as Quinn Pensky, Sean Flynn Sean Flynn as Chase Matthews, Matthew Underwood as Logan Reese, Christopher Massey as Michael Barret, Abby Wilde as Stacey Dillsen and Jack Salvatore Jr. as Mark Del Figgalo.

The film is being directed by Nancy Hower from a script by Monica Sherer and Madeline Whitby.

Kimmie Stewart Casting of Wilmington has posted notices in recent days seeking extras and background actors for a "Paramount feature film" that shoots through Feb. 17.

According to a blog associated with the casting service, this week the production has been shooting at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Scenes include "live taping of a dating show finale" and "a Ted Talk in London."

Film permits filed with the city of Wilmington have the production shooting in the coming days at Common Desk on North Front Street and at the Monteith Construction on Princess Streets.
