Final days of early voting in Duval County, here is what the turnout looks like:

The last chance for early voters to cast their ballots in the 2023 Duval Unitary Election is on Sunday.

City council seats are on the line, but the mayor’s race is the big race on the ballot.

On Friday, Action News Jax checked the Supervisor of Elections website, and so far, democrats are leading early voting turnout. It reveals that Democrats have cast about 3% more ballots than republicans.

The Supervisor of Elections told Action News Jax that the parties have flipped compared to previous years and while mail ballots are favored by democrats, republicans are voting more on election day.

Early voter Mark Quesnell said early voting was a simple and easy process.

“I walked in, there were no lines at all, I walked in, went straight in, gave them my ID , got my voting paper and I was in and out probably 5 minutes,” said Quesnell.

Friday, early voting locations across Jacksonville were filled with more people than days prior, according to the Supervisor of Elections, Mike Hogan.

“There has been an uptick, the first two hours we saw 750 people an hour and it had been averaging bellow 500 the rest of the previous days, so that’s a good sign,” said Hogan.

As of 5.p.m Friday , early voter turnout was at 11%. The original projection was about 30-to-35 percent of registered voters, which would be an increase from elections in 2015 and 2019 which also had a mayoral race.

Hogan said he won’t know if we’ll surpass early voting numbers until after Sunday. But Hogan has a theory on why it’s been slower.

“There’s a lot of new candidates, names that people don’t know and I think they are doing their homework and trying to find out about these folks before they go vote,” Hogan said.

Hogan said they aren’t sure if it will get to the expected turnout of 30-to-35 percent, but he expects there to be an increase over the last two days of early voting.
