Final Fantasy VII and potential FFVII Rebirth spoilers follow.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's directors have spoken about Aerith's fate in the second part of the Remake trilogy.

In the original game, Aerith famously dies at the Forgotten Capital at the end of Disc 1, as Sephiroth turns up out of the blue and murders her. Despite many urban myths, especially in the late 1990s, there was no way to bring her back to life or save her.

Remake took a twist in which our heroes defeated the Whispers, ghosts that popped up to make sure events unfolded as they did in the original, making it seem like anything could happen in parts two and three. A recent trailer seems to show Aerith there with the Whispers floating around her. Does that mean that she's still going to die there?

Speaking to Game Informer, game director Naoki Hamaguchi didn't reveal any spoilers, but stated that Rebirth will end at that infamous location.

"For Rebirth, we are following Cloud and the party's journey all the way up to the Forgotten Capital where we will seek our Aerith's fate; that is the landing point for Rebirth," he said.

"Along the way, players will see the characters interact and deepen their bonds with each other. That is a focal point."

"I do believe that the way we have depicted it brings about a new emotion and a new feeling for both players who have played the original Final Fantasy VII and newcomers," added creative director Tetsuya Nomura. "I was able to do what I truly wanted to show in this title."

Whatever happens in this new version of the scene, it looks like it will result in someone's death, as Nomura explained that the theme of loss is just as important to this trilogy as it was to the original.

"Prior to Final Fantasy VII, there have been other titles where characters have experienced tragedy, but many of them have come back or been revived in some ways. But I believe that loss is something that happens unexpectedly," he said

"It's not something so dramatic or drawn out, but is something in which a person that you have just conversed with is suddenly gone and never to come back.

"I believe that the person who dies should not return in this title, and that is what we did with the original."

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be released on February 29 on PlayStation 5.
