Final voting results show Molder as mayor, newcomer in Mt. Pleasant

Incumbent Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder won a second term on Tuesday over challenger Debbie Matthews, county Republican party chairman and former city council member, according to final unofficial election results.

Molder leaned on Columbia's unprecedented economic success in which sales tax revenues exceeded property tax revenues, according to recent city reports.

Matthews' main concern during her campaign was managing growth in a smart way, including pushing for a countywide building impact fee that would require Tennessee General Assembly approval. Matthews has also criticized the city's approval of large scale development projects that could open the door to "sprawl."

In Mt. Pleasant, the two top vote-getters were newcomer Pam Johnston and Mike Davis, edging out opponents Mt. Pleasant native Larry Chapman, Eric Harvey and Jake Sykes. Johnston focused on preserving a small-town feel amid growth during the election.

In the 5th Congressional District Andy Ogles, former Maury County Mayor reigned over Sen. Heidi Campbell, D-Nashville. Ogles will be heading to Washington to represent the newly-drawn, largely conservative 5th District.
