Jul. 30—The Richmond Register will be hosting its second-annual Unsung Heroes Awards event on Aug. 4 at the EKU Perkins Building.

Everyone in the community is welcome to attend and show their support for locals who have made a significant positive impact.

"We were very excited to bring back the Unsung Heroes Awards for another year. This year, we were able to expand the categories to include local students. We felt it was important to highlight Madison County's younger generations and the work they are doing to build a better future. Our community is blessed to have an abundance of great people doing positive work for Madison County," Register Editor Ricki Pryor said.

The Unsung Heroes event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and feature a breakfast buffet and award ceremony in which the paper will honor the finalists and winners of the Unsung Heroes Awards.

"Congratulations to our finalists for our Unsung Heroes of Madison County publication and event. We have a great group of finalists this year. The work the finalists have done is a testament to the caring community that is Madison County. While we will select a "winner" from our two finalists for each category, in fact they are all winners," Register Publisher Gary Tyler said.

After seeking nominations from the public and Madison County institutions, the Register's Unsung Hero selection committee narrowed down the nominees to 15 finalists in seven categories.

The 2022 finalists are:

Betty Plowman

Ainsley White

Jordan Barnard

James White

Jennifer Kermeen

Dan Kirstein

Open Concern

Sherman DeShields

Walter Rhodus

David Eastham

Paula Felty

Michelle Dunaway

Trish Jackson

Zaydon Flannelly

Ella Thomason

Each finalist was nominated for service to their community the past previous year, and will be honored at the awards ceremony next month.

Winners of the Unsung Heroes Awards for each category will be announced at the event, as well as the Unsung Hero of the Year.

"Every nominee and finalist deserves a big thank you from all of us in Madison County," Tyler said.

The event is sponsored by the Richmond Register, Baptist Health Richmond, EKU Catering and Newby Country Store.

Tickets are $40 per person and tables of eight can be purchased for $300. Guests of finalists will receive a discounted ticket for $20. For more information about pricing, contact Gary Tyler at 859-624-6682. To purchase tickets visit
