Spidey goes to Europe, meets Mysterio in 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' trailer

Between the huge box-office numbers for Venom and the critical acclaim for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (not to mention the awards victories), it appears that Sony’s burgeoning Spider-Man universe is just going to keep growing with sequels and spinoffs featuring various Spider-people. Over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though, actor Tom Holland is still the one and only wall-crawler. True, that version of Peter Parker appeared to meet his end in Avengers: Infinity War, bidding a tear-jerking (and largely improvised) farewell to his mentor, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.).

But c’mon … you didn’t think he was really squashed for good, right? On Tuesday morning, the long-awaited trailer for Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, the follow-up to the 2017 hit Homecoming, was released. Due in theaters in July, two months after the Avengers’ return, the film sends Peter overseas to Europe with his classmates M.J. (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon). Initially, Peter doesn’t intend to play hero while he’s overseas, saying, “Europe doesn’t really need a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.”

But in the middle of his grand European tour, he’s approached by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) —looking alive and well after his Infinity War dusting — and enlisted in a top-secret mission. That mission has something to do with giant elemental monsters that are attacking various major cities, including a possible Hydro-Man appearance in Venice. But Spidey isn’t the only super-powered tourist taking on these baddies; he’s literally beaten to the punch by a caped Jake Gyllenhaal, who advertises himself as a hero. But he’s better known to fans as one of the Spider-Man’s best enemies, the master of illusion, Mysterio.

Along with a new location, Far From Home will provide Parker with an all-new suit. At the Brazil Comic-Con, Sony unveiled the MCU version of Spidey’s stealth suit, which made its comic book debut in 2011. Designed for maximum sneakiness, this outfit should make Parker invisible to the eye, just like a certain Spider-Man from another universe.

The trailer also suggests that Far From Home is venturing where no Spider-Man movie has gone before by giving Peter’s beloved Aunt May — who is fully aware of, and onboard with, her nephew being a big-time superhero — a potential new romance. Ben Parker’s widow (played by Marisa Tomei) is moving on from Parker’s uncle with Tony Stark’s right-hand man, Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau). Tony himself isn’t mentioned in the trailer, but we’re hoping that, if he survives Endgame, the nuptials between Happy and May would make him and Peter friends-in-law.

Peter Parker returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the next chapter of the Spider-Man: Homecoming series! Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, M.J., and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks are quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks, creating havoc across the continent!
