Anheuser-Busch sales still down in U.S. one year after Bud Light backlash

ST. LOUIS – Domestic beer sales of Anheuser-Busch brands are still down in the United States, more than one year after Bud Light’s partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney was met with pushback.

Anheuser-Busch InBev reports that revenue from U.S. sales slipped 9.1% in the first quarter of 2024, while sales-to-retailers were down 13.1%. The quarterly report, which covers January to March of 2024, says the STR decline was “primarily due to the volume decline of Bud Light.”

The report also notes that A-B sales globally topped $14.5 billion and that total revenue over the quarter increased by 2.6%.

Bud Light, the company’s longtime bestseller in the U.S., noticed its sales plummet last spring after conservative backlash around the company’s partnership with Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender influencer who was featured in advertisements and on cans of Bud Light.

According to the Associated Press, A-B InBev CEO Michel Doukeris says that U.S. beer volumes improved near the end of last year and the company has noticed strides with other brands, such as Michelob Ultra and Busch Light. Michelob Ultra is also expected to be part of a marketing push during this year’s Summer Olympics.

Founded in 1857, Anheuser-Busch is headquartered in St. Louis and employs more than 4,500 people in the region. A-B operates more than 120 facilities and owns 12 breweries nationwide.
