Defunct Kenmore auto dealer agrees to pay thousands following buyer complaints

A defunct Akron car dealership agreed to pay nearly $37,000 after a settlement was reached in mid-April in a lawsuit filed by Attorney General Dave Yost.

The lawsuit accused the business and its owner of failing to provide vehicle titles to dozens of car buyers.

SJ Motorworks and its owner, Shane Beers of Akron, will pay $37,370 to the Ohio Attorney General's Office in $1,000 per month installments that started on May 1, according to court records. If he does not make those payments, Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Alison McCarty could order him to pay a $25,000 penalty.

The dealership operated on West Wilbeth Road in the Kenmore area and was registered as an LLC to a Hudson address. It was in business between April 2019 and May 2023.

Yost's office received 114 complaints about the business, of which 90 focused on vehicle titles. The office reimbursed 26 complaints totaling $71,687 from the Title Defect Recision Fund. The state fund is a program that helps used car buyers resolve title problems.

To replenish those funds, the Ohio Attorney General's Office received $34,317 from Hudson Insurance Group. The remaining $37,370 remaining will be paid by Beers, according to court documents.

Beers could not be immediately reached by email or phone for comment. An operator message indicated the phone number listed for the business has been disconnected.

The Better Business Bureau website shows 11 complaints were filed with the consumer advocacy group in three years. Nine of those complaints occurred in 12 months.

Consumers alleged that the business failed to produce titles, stalled titles to outlive warranties, failed to produce accurate paperwork and did not repair or provide warranty services, according to the BBB.
