NMDOT launches education program for businesses

Apr. 30—The deadline for the first-ever New Mexico Department of Transportation business development program is fast approaching.

The NMDOT is preparing to launch its Small Business Training and Resources, or STAR, program, which is designed for small businesses looking to do business with NMDOT. The 14-week program starts May 14. The deadline to apply is Tuesday by 5 p.m.

The STAR program is free and aims to support Disadvantaged Business Enterprises and other small businesses to overcome obstacles and secure project contracts.

The program will include expert-led workshops, practical tools and personalized coaching for businesses trying to secure government contracts.

"Having a program that offers support and essential training to DBEs helps grow our local economy and business community. NMDOT wants small businesses to have more opportunities to partner with NMDOT and in turn, bolster the local business economy," Ricky Serna, NMDOT Cabinet Secretary, said in a statement.

The STAR program will strive to provide business officials with suggested corrections and improvements to any financial, managerial, technical or labor conditions that could prevent them from receiving government contracts, according to the NMDOT news release.
