A fine set of pipes

Dec. 9—The Piper Jones Band will bring bagpipes and Celtic tunes straight from the Deep South — of the United States, not Scotland or Ireland. EJ Jones of Asheville, N.C., plays the pipes, flutes, and whistles, and Frances Cunningham of Nashville, Tenn., accompanies on the eight-string Irish bouzouki. Each occasionally performs solo, while the other exhorts the crowd to participate in traditional dancing.

Their Santa Fe stop is one of four planned this month in New Mexico, with the others in Socorro, Sandia Park, and Albuquerque. They play traditional songs from Ireland, Scotland, and Appalachia, as well as originals. Jones, the band's namesake, has been playing bagpipes since 1987. Cunningham, a Texas native, played the Irish bouzouki weekly for five years with the Grand Ole Opry.

3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, op.cit. books, 157 Paseo de Peralta, $20 suggested fee and RSVPs are encouraged; email roselassie@comcast.net or call 505-280-4382
