Finn Wittrock Digs Taylor Swift’s Folklore Album Like the Rest of Us

If you're plugged into the Ryan Murphy universe, you know Finn Wittrock very well. The actor first appeared in a Murphy project six years ago with the TV film The Normal Heart. He then made a splash as the conniving Dandy Mott on American Horror Story: Freak Show before nabbing memorable roles in AHS: Hotel, Roanoke, 1984, and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Wittrock's latest Murphy collaboration is the Netflix series Ratched, in which he plays a serial killer named Edmund Tolleson. All of this is to say the 35-year-old has a master's degree in spooky—so, naturally, he was game to play a Halloween-themed round of Glamour's Inappropriate Questions, where we ask your favorite actors the cheeky, slightly off-kilter stuff best saved for a second (or third) date. Read on.

Do you think your characters on Ratched and American Horror Story: Freak Show, Edmund and Dandy, would get along?

Finn Wittrock: Edmund would think Dandy is the lamest person ever. I feel like one of them would not survive the encounter, but I'm not sure who. I feel like Dandy might take more pleasure in killing Edmund than Edmund would in killing Dandy.

As a horror king, what scary movies do you like to watch around this time of year?

I love the original films of certain franchises. The first Halloween, to me, is really, truly a great movie, knowing that it was made from a tiny budget and it's so well-filmed. There's so much suspense. So much of it is just stalking people from a distance. The original The Grudge [from Japan] is one of my favorites. The original Japanese Ringu is so, so, so scary. I like to go back to the originals and freak myself out.

What Halloween costume are you most proud of?

I loved Halloween as a kid because my birthday's October 28, and when I was young, we'd always have a birthday-slash-Halloween party. We'd get sugar high on cake and then more sugar high trick-or-treating, and it was great. I was Hedwig one time in high school. I went full Hedwig, and I looked pretty good!

Let’s say we’re out of quarantine and you're going to a Halloween party. You stop by a convenience store to pick up some things. What are you buying?

Probably some pumpkin ale. I feel like there's a lack of good chocolate at Halloween parties, so I'd bring some nice dark chocolate.

Is there a dating or a relationship rule you think is total B.S.?

I've been married for so long; my life is so boring. What even are the rules? I feel like it's not great to google someone too deeply before you meet them. Isn't that true? Everyone going into dates not really blind and having done all this research might take away what the first impression would be otherwise. That's a problem in general. Like you say, “I went to blah, blah, blah,” and your friends go, “I know. I saw you [on social media].” You can't talk about anything anymore.

What do you think is the sexiest thing about yourself?

I've worked pretty hard for this jawline. I'm not gonna let that pass by! [Laughs.]

What is the weirdest thing you do in your alone time?

I'm pretty dull, like I said. I do the crossword puzzle, and I've been reading Don Quixote in my free time…pretty lame! I get the Sunday Times delivered, so I do the Sunday crossword by hand. But in quarantine, I've been doing it daily online, which is fun because it gets harder as the week goes on. You feel very smart on Monday, and by Saturday you're feeling like your IQ is wanting.

Screw, marry, kill: weed, pizza, or a cocktail?

I'd screw the cocktail, that's for sure. I think I'd have to marry the pizza. If it's a good Italian place, just straight margherita pizza is the best. I love mushrooms and black olives too. That's not easy! And if I had to get rid of something, I'd get rid of the weed.

While we’re on the topic of alcohol, do you have a hangover cure that you go to?

You have to have an ice-cold light beer the next day, but it has to be ice-cold.

What are you currently binge-watching?

I've been rewatching older stuff, like comfort food. The West Wing! I'm trying to stay current too. I'm watching I May Destroy You, which I'm halfway through. It's one of the shows I can't binge because it's so much. You need a break in between, which is kind of how I feel about Ratched. When people are like, “I watched it all in 10 hours,” I'm like, “You should lie down.” I love the new Mark Ruffalo show, I Know This Much Is True. Some brilliant acting, but that, too, I need a break in between.

What’s a song on your streaming playlist people would be surprised by?

I think people would be surprised to know I like the new Taylor Swift album [Folklore]. I was surprised! What's it called? The one with the girl who's, like, an oil heir? “The Last Great American Dynasty.” That's my favorite.

Do you ever turn to astrology for guidance? Are you an astrology person?

I'm not an astrology person, but I definitely read horoscopes every now and then just to see where I'm at. If my life will be changing today! I'm a Scorpio: passionate, loyal. What I read about Scorpios is they don't make a lot of friends, but the ones they do they keep for life, which I think is pretty accurate.
