Fintech CFO, Decorist founder selling their exclusive 1910 San Francisco home: $17.9M

Inside the gates of the affluent Presidio Terrace neighborhood of San Francisco, a classic four-story Edwardian mansion with an elegant modern interior has just hit the market for nearly $18 million.

Originally designed in 1910 by notable Bay Area architect Julius W. Krafft, “the home was flawlessly reimagined and rebuilt” down to the studs in 2013,” according to Compass real estate firm. The formal spaces were preserved for entertaining while the grand “daily living” footprint was expanded.

The stunning home’s refined interior and large, soaring spaces were created by current owners Lee Hansen, CFO of fintech company Uphold, and Gretchen Hansen, founder of the online design services brand Decorist, a Compass representative said.

The estate — located at 23 Presidio Terrace, San Francisco, California — spans 9,500-square-feet with seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms. It last sold in 2012 for $5.85 million.

“When I first walked in and saw that the front door was raised to its maximum height, I knew I was in for something special and I was not disappointed,” listing agent Neal Ward of Compass said in an email. “This home has been re-envisioned and rebuilt with entertaining and family living thoughtfully considered throughout.”

The main level flows seamlessly from entry hall to formal living and dining rooms — with a fireplace — to the library and balcony overlooking the yard. There’s an open-concept kitchen with a family lounge and dining area.

Up on the second floor sprawls the primary suite with its private terrace, hot tub, lounge and dual offices that could be used for bedrooms. Another level up brings in three additional bedrooms and baths, plus a bonus family room where sweeping city views unfold southward.

The lower garden level has a gym, steam/sauna room, guest suite, wine cellar, and media/recreation room that opens to the landscaped backyard, lined by mature bamboo, for more entertainment with a grass turf area, putting green and brick patio. A magnificent outdoor spiral staircase climbs to the second level balcony from the garden.

“This meticulously finished home has everything needed for today’s modern lifestyle,” the listing states.

Presidio Terrace is a small, upscale community consisting of 36 large lots around a privately owned cul-de-sac. Past residents include Senator Dianne Feinstein and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and former San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto. Also, the British Consulate is located there.

In 2015, a young San Jose couple purchased the entire street and neighborhood, sidewalks and other “common ground”, including garden islands and palm trees, for $90,000 as a result of delinquent non-payment of county property taxes by the Presidio Terrace homeowners association.

Presidio Terrace homeowners, concerned that the new property owners would charge them for parking in the 120 spaces on the street, asked the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to void the sale. In November 2017, the Board of Supervisors voted 7–4 to reverse the sale, reverting ownership to the homeowners.
