FOND DU LAC – A fire killed several pets Wednesday night in a second-floor apartment above The Bullpen on West Ninth Street, the City of Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue Department said.

Fire crews were dispatched to the tavern at 243 W. Ninth St. shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday. They arrived to find heavy fire blazing from a second-floor window. Fire Chief Eric Gerritsen said a resident of the apartment was downstairs in the tavern, and no one was in the apartment when the fire started.

The fire department said no one was injured, but several pets in the apartment died in the blaze, and the apartment itself was heavily damaged. Gerritsen said the bar only sustained some water damage while fire crews were fighting the blaze upstairs.

The owner of The Bullpen could not immediately be reached for comment.

Gerritsen said the department "cannot rule out" an electrical cause to the fire. He pointed to an overloaded extension cord as the most likely culprit. He also encouraged the public not to use extension cords for auxiliary or space heaters.
